Synopsis
America in the1950’s of the 20th century. We are witnesses of the beginnings of electronic media journalism. The film tells a story of the actual conflict between TV journalist Edward R. Murrow and powerful senator Joseph McCarthy and the Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations (Government Operations Committee). Wishing to bring closer to the public a delicate case, Murrow and his loyal crew fight against corporative and censor committees especially active and rigorous at that time famous for McCarthy’s witch hunt on 'the reds'. The case becomes more interesting when McCarthy charges Murrow for being a communist. Despite general fear, CBS stubbornly keeps on, which eventually pays off. McCarthy is brought before the Senate, where his lies and blackmail tactics are revealed, and he himself looses power. It was a historical, political, but also a journalistic moment.
Awards The film premiered at Venice Film Festival in 2005, where it received six awards; FIPRESCI award, Special Prize of the Human Rights Film Network, the Pasineti award for the best film, best script award (George Clooney, Grant Heslov) and best actor award (David Strathairn).
